While much more research is needed, researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies published a study that some say hint at a relationship between marijuana use and Alzheimer’s disease.
Scientifically speaking, the study wasn’t focused on those specific topics; rather researchers looked at specific types of cells in the brain and how they interact. The study can be found in its entirety right here, but it can be an admittedly tough read for non-biologists.
The research references cannabinoids, and specifically tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), stating that they were found to be protective from certain proteins found in the brain and associated with aging and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
It should not be forgotten (bad pun) that both cannabinoids and Alzheimer’s disease (as well as the brain in general) all need much more research before we can make statements about the link between the two with any reasonable degree of accuracy.
The good news is, thanks to those at the Salk Institute and scientists all over the world, the research is ongoing.
